Traveling While Plant Based and Gluten-Free in Botswana and Zimbabwe

When we got back to the lodge and ate breakfast from the buffet. I had baked beans with mushrooms and onions and lots of fruit.
Oranges and grapefruit, so yummy.
Later that day we did an incredible river tour. We saw so many elephants playing. We also saw hippos, water buffalo, some really cool birds, and crocodiles. I could have watched these elephants all day.
Hippos grazing at the marsh.
An elephant family taking a stroll. Baby is in the middle, always protected.
You can’t really see it, but there’s a big-ass crocodile behind us above my head with its mouth wide open. I never knew, but this is how they stay warm. I love this picture of me because my happiness is radiating out of me. This was one of the coolest days of my life.
The view from our dinner table, looking out at the Chobe River.
Dinner was a delicious veggie stir fry and rice. The buffet had a lot of food, but they didn’t have any plant based and gluten-free options, so I asked the cook if she could make some veggies and rice for me without any meat or dairy. She was happy to do it!
A special vegan cake because so many vegans were in the house!

There was a big group of people from Atlanta staying at the same lodge as us and half of them were vegan!

The chef made a vegan chocolate cake because there were so many of us. It wasn’t gluten-free, but I ate it anyway. I figured if my face broke out, then I would deal with it. And if it didn’t, then maybe my gluten allergy was gone?

I learned three things.

  1. The cake was DAMN DELICIOUS
  2. I am still very much sensitive to gluten
  3. The cake was almost worth the breakout on my face the next day
Breakfast before we left Kasane to head south.
Cornflakes, sautéed mushrooms, grapefruit, orange, green tea, and a gluten-free muffin that was not vegan, but I still ate half of it.
I found some vegan gluten-free junk food for the car. It was a small miracle.

I was so lucky on my trip to Africa. We stayed in 3 different lodges and each one provided vegan meals for me! I had brought some items for snacks but rarely needed them. There was always cooked veggies, hot cereal and fruit for breakfast and all kinds of beans and lentils and all kinds of curry. Did you ever pee behind termite mounds? That was our go to hehe

Sounds like an amazing trip, Debra. Molly said they did not pee on any (lol!) but they saw thousands of them! The mounds changed colors as they drove through different regions of the countries. They also saw mounds that were 20 feet tall!
